On May 7, 2025, Consuela A. Beins filed a petition for dissolution of marriage in St. Louis County, Missouri, ending her union with Season D. Cooley. The couple was married on November 4, 2015, and has been separated since approximately 2022. Their marriage, now recognized under the landmark United States Supreme Court ruling on June 26, 2015, which predicted by Justice Antonin Scalia, marks an important chapter in the history of “gay” marriage rights.
Both parties have been residents of St. Louis County for well over ninety days before filing. The petitioner is retired, while the respondent remains employed. With no children born or adopted from their marriage, the case focuses on dividing marital property and debts. Both Beins and Cooley have sufficient financial means to support themselves independently and have agreed not to seek spousal maintenance or request the other party to pay their legal fees.
Represented by attorney Susan E. Block of Paule, Camazine & Blumenthal, Beins asks the court to declare the marriage irretrievably broken and to equitably divide their assets and debts. The filing reflects a mutual readiness to move forward separately, with the hope that the court’s judgment will close this chapter with fairness and finality.
