The dissolution of a 12-year marriage between Nathan Todd La Porte and Leah Birge Handel has begun its course through the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois. Filed on October 16, 2024, La Porte, representing himself pro se, submitted a petition citing irreconcilable differences as the cause for the breakdown of the marriage. The pair had lived separately since May 2023, unable to resolve their differences after years of marriage, with La Porte declaring that further reconciliation efforts would be impractical and not in the best interest of their family.
The couple shares two minor children, Cyrus, age 9, and Felix, age 6, for whom both parties have agreed upon a Joint Parenting Agreement. According to La Porte, the Marital Settlement Agreement outlines all aspects of custody, support, and the division of marital property and debts. The agreement details that both parents are fit to share custody and that the children’s needs can best be met under the terms they’ve outlined together.
No requests for spousal maintenance have been made beyond what is stipulated in their agreement. La Porte prays the court to dissolve the marriage, approve the Joint Parenting Agreement, and uphold the division of assets and debts outlined in the settlement.
The case, marked by the clarity of its mutually crafted agreements, now awaits judicial approval for a final order to officially end the marriage of La Porte and Handel.
